Our founders

Ed and Andi Conway + Nick and Chelsea Vera

After working together for several years and sharing the same passion for training and people, coach Nick and coach Ed decided to open their own gym. They desired to cultivate a community based on fitness, family, and faith. In 2014 Ed & Andi Conway along with Nick & Chelsea Vera, founded the Tribe. Together, they are fully invested in making this an enjoyable place of inspiring a community to learn happily, lead humbly, and love hard. They have intentionally built a staff that follows these same values and has a heart for seeing others succeed. Because of a unified front that puts others above self, our tribe feels more like a family. A family that suffers together, grows together, and succeeds together.

Nick Vera coach at The Tribe/ 3F CrossFit

Nick Vera

Co Owner/Head Coach

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” – 1 Peter 4:10 Since graduating from Trinity University with a degree in Accounting in 2007, Nick’s focus has been helping others achieve their goals in both sports and fitness. After playing 4 years of college baseball at Trinity University and a 3 year professional baseball career in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, Nick went back to his alma mater as the hitting/strength and conditioning coach. It was in these few years back at Trinity that he found his passion as a coach. Since then Nick has been pursuing the art of helping others define and reach their goals. He has worked with people from all walks of life: professional athletes looking to reach elite levels of athleticism, kids just getting starting on their fitness journey, grandparents trying to improve their quality of life, and amputees returning from service in the military and of course the everyday moms and dads who are looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Nick believes that anyone who walks into The Tribe Strength and Conditioning can benefit from what he and the coaching staff have to offer with regards to health and fitness.

Ed Conway coach at The Tribe/ 3F CrossFit

Ed Conway

Co Owner/Head Coach

In 2008, after a long break from Football, Ed reclaimed his passion for fitness, sport and nutrition. After gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, it was time for a change. Through the efforts of his personal trainer, encouragement and support from his loving wife, and plain determination and hard work, the results spoke for themselves. Ed experienced higher self esteem, a healthier and more fit physique, and a better quality of life. It wasn’t long before Ed was competing in local and regional level competitions testing his strength and conditioning. Though the physical and emotional transformation was nice, he realized that his true passion for fitness wasn’t for his own personal accolades and goals, but helping others reach theirs. After coaching for over 4 years, Ed has come full circle to open and co-own The Tribe Strength & Conditioning. Whether an aspiring athlete, weightlifter, or someone who simply wants to better their quality of life, Ed is excited to share his education in fitness, Olympic weightlifting and nutrition in an effort to make a positive impact on your life

Shawn Newman coach at The Tribe/ 3F CrossFit

Shawn began CrossFit the summer before his freshman year of high school as a way to strength train for football. As he dove more and more into the world of CrossFit he quickly realized his passion for the sport and began competing in the CrossFit Open in the teenage division. His success in the Open led him to securing a spot in the Online Qualifier where he placed well but missed the cutoff to qualify for the CrossFit Games by a few spots! As Shawn grew more as an athlete he began to also discover his passion for seeing others progress in the sport as well. He began shadowing under Nick and Ed in late 2018 and became a coach for The Tribe by the end of that year. Coaching for Shawn isn’t just a job, it’s an outlet for him to serve others and watch them grow in their athletic journey! Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

Stephen Bourne

Coach

Stephen’s passion for fitness began early as he graduated with a degree in Exercise Science with a specialization in Strength and Conditioning Coaching from University of Texas at Austin. At his time there he worked with the Men’s Basketball program and fell in love with strength and conditioning, especially around the sport of basketball. After he graduated, he worked as the Trinity Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach. He coached basketball and programmed their strength and conditioning during his two years at Trinity. It grew clear that his main passion was training athletes and building programs to get people stronger and fitter. He left basketball and entered private fitness coaching at a gym in San Antonio called Revolution as a personal trainer and functional movement coach. Since then he has entered a new career as a Sales Engineer at NetBrain Technologies but his love for fitness has always remained. He has always kept up his personal fitness endeavors: marathon running, cycling, jiu Jitsu, Olympic style lifting and now CrossFit. He started training at The Tribe in 2021 after his daughter Elliott was born and fell in love with the training style. CrossFit has married so many different movements that Stephen has loved over his years of training and is thankful he walked through the Tribe’s doors. CrossFit has brought him so much energy, confidence, and community after struggling to find his groove post-pandemic. He is thankful to be able to continue fulfilling his love for teaching and coaching fitness at such a wonderful and inclusive gym.

Mark McFeaters

Coach

Mark is relatively new to CrossFit but no stranger to the continuous pursuit of physical fitness goals. He trained for and played multiple sports through high school until attending the U.S. Military Academy where he shifted his focus to preparing for the demands of a career in the Army. Since commissioning as an officer, Mark has pushed himself and led his Soldiers to achieve higher levels of fitness for over a decade. After moving to San Antonio in 2022 for his current assignment, his lovely wife Emily discovered the Tribe and convinced him to check it out. He instantly fell in love with the high intensity and constant variance of CrossFit workouts, but more importantly, the welcoming and familial atmosphere of the Tribe.

Mike Egan

Coach

Nate Wernke coach at The Tribe/ 3F CrossFit

Nate Wernke

Coach

Nate has always had a passion for fitness and sports. While pursuing a degree in Computer Science Engineering at THE Ohio State University, he found himself getting burnt out by the repetitiveness of bodybuilding routines and constantly seeing CrossFit advertisements online. He decided to give it a shot and walked into his local CrossFit gym and signed up. He instantly fell in love with the intensity and variance of the workouts. Over time he grew to appreciate the community aspect more and more and it is now his favorite part of showing up to the gym everyday. Nate discovered his passion for coaching and developing others in the sport CrossFit during COVID when he found himself running a makeshift CrossFit gym out of his family’s garage. He learned through this experience that he can serve others by helping them through their fitness journey. Since then, he married his beautiful wife Kelsey and moved to San Antonio. They both consider The Tribe to be their second home and extended family. If Nate isn’t at the gym, you can probably find him on a golf course or reading a book at home.

Caesar Morales coach at The Tribe/ 3F CrossFit

Caesar Morales

Caesar has been part of the CrossFit community for over ten years. He initially started his fitness journey in 2012 in preparation for the police academy and never looked back. After serving several years in law enforcement, Caesar knows how critical it is to maintain physical fitness in order to meet the rigorous demands while on duty and in everyday life. He transitioned out of law enforcement back in 2020 and into business consulting specializing in white collar crimes. Now, his family and health are his main motivators and biggest inspiration to staying fit. Caesar felt a strong call to begin coaching, sharing his knowledge, and his passion with others. He was born and raised in San Antonio and graduated from Texas State University in 2012 where he met his wife, Melanie. Together, they have two beautiful children – Zoe and Micah, two German Shepherds and one cat.
